Chapter Fourteen — Cade
I’d been completely blown away last night when I’d realized “Daisy” was Jane Starzmann. She looked so different, and yet the smile and the dimple were the same, and her voice, and the way she chewed on her lower lip when she was nervous. When she didn’t meet me after the concert, I was worried she’d run into Scott and had figured out that I’d not been 100% straight with her.
I knew I needed to tell her the truth.
Though, it occurred to me that she hadn’t been one-hundred-percent honest with me either. Unfortunately, I couldn’t ask her about that. Because Cade wouldn’t know that she hadn’t told Scott she’d lost what had to have been half her body weight. But why wouldn’t she tell me?
“Hey Jane, are you going walking today?” Jane’s employee asked from behind the register. He pointed to the clock. “Lunch rush will start in an hour.”
She glanced at the clock and sighed a little. “Yeah. I should.”
“Want company?” I asked.
She smiled shyly. “Surely you have to have something more interesting to do than wander up the bike path with me.”
“I’m on vacation. I’m reveling in the fact that I can do whatever I want without anyone requiring anything from me.” I pulled my wallet out of my back pocket, then plucked five dollars from inside. “Will this cover it?”
She nodded, and rang up the sale at the register. She tried to give me my change back. “Keep it.”
“Thanks.”
“How far do you walk?” I asked when she came back from the back room in gym shoes, having swapped her chef’s jacket and black checkered slacks for cropped yoga pants and a plain red T-shirt with a gold Wonder Woman logo. I fell into step beside her after we left the bakery.
“I go for an hour.” She pointed to the bike path which cut through the town square. “Twenty-seven minutes that direction, and thirty-three minutes back.” She shrugged. “It’s usually somewhere between three and three-and-a-half miles.
“Which means you’re running at least part of it.”
She hesitated for a long moment. “I take the first mile or so at a slow jog.”
“You’ll have to go easy on me. I’ve spent the last six months on a bus.”
She raised an eyebrow at me. “You were part of the cross-country team in high school. I’m confident you can keep up.”
“I’m glad I’m wearing my sneakers instead of my boots.”
“Aren’t you afraid you’ll be recognized?” she asked, once we hit the bike path, which crossed through the town square, and thus, right next to Jane’s bakery.
“Funny story. I’m rarely recognized without my Stetson.” I pointed to my ball cap, which I’d donned once we left Jane’s Jam & Bread.
She looked into my face. “I guess I can see that.”
“What about you? Was the reason you gave a different name that you didn’t want to be recognized singing last night?”
“Annie submitted that video. I didn’t know she was going to do it until after it was done.” She sighed. “And no one recognizes me anyway.
